Today, the patient has been insulin-free for 33 months, an enduring testament to the success of this treatment.
Diabetes is a chronic condition leading to severe complications if mismanaged. Traditional treatments involve insulin injections and constant monitoring, which can be burdensome. However, this new cell therapy leverages the body's regenerative capabilities.
The innovative approach involves programming peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to transform them into seed cells that can recreate pancreatic islet tissue in an artificial environment. This method restores the body’s insulin production naturally, eliminating the need for external administration.
"Our technology has matured and pushed boundaries in the field of regenerative medicine for diabetes treatment," stated lead researcher Yin.
This groundbreaking therapy has profound implications, especially in China, which has the highest number of diabetes patients globally. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 140 million people suffer from the condition, with 40 million relying on lifelong insulin injections.
"I think this study represents an important advance in the field of cell therapy for diabetes," praised Timothy Kieffer, a professor at the University of British Columbia.
