Dental Implant treatment goes wrong. Again and again!
Dental procedures can often involve complex scenarios where treatments do not proceed as initially anticipated. In this article, we delve into a challenging case that required patience, expertise, and adaptability.
We embarked on a rigorous journey with a patient requiring extensive dental work due to the absence of upper teeth, leading us to use zygomatic implants. Unlike conventional implants, these involve the cheekbone, thereby necessitating a CT scan that captures the zygomatic arches.
Yet, this journey was far from smooth. Initial obstacles included receiving an incomplete CT scan that failed to cover the necessary cheekbone area. Amid setbacks, patience remained key as further complications emerged with one implant appearing loose, indicating a failure.
Implant failures, while not painful, can be troublesome. In our case, the patient felt discomfort, which upon examination, established that an implant had indeed loosened. This discovery necessitated the removal of the faulty implant followed by a healing period.
After sufficient healing, the zygomatic implant was replaced, but multiple temporary solutions weren't viable long-term. A firm diagnosis of the issue was critical to devising an enduring resolution.
Recognizing the limit of existing treatments, we opted to place additional short and rigid teroid implants at the back, counteracting the flex previously experienced in longer implants. This strategic maneuver not only minimized further flex but significantly enhanced stability.
For a lasting resolution, we later employed a full zirconia bridge reinforced by an internal metal bar, ensuring enhanced strength and durability compared to an acrylic setup.
Throughout this process, our patient endured considerable disruption yet maintained trust in our practice, showing resilience and understanding for each hurdle encountered. Thus, maintaining an excellent patient-practitioner relationship while offering cost-free rectifications for issues beyond the patient's control was paramount.
"Even when things don’t go right, our commitment is to put them right, without additional costs for the patient,"
highlighting our firm resolve to uphold the practice promise. This case serves as a reminder of the long-term responsibility healthcare professionals bear toward their patients and the integrity of the completion promise.
Complex dental implant procedures involve unforeseen circumstances demanding careful problem-solving and commitment. As experienced by this patient, recovery involves patience both from a clinical and personal standpoint. For anyone contemplating such treatments, understanding potential hurdles and engaging closely with the operability and trustworthiness of dental practitioners equalizes the prospects for a successful outcome.
Ultimately, the restoration biography is not always linear, often unveiling lessons beyond showcase portfolios.
