Regulate Your Nervous System | 15 Minute Yoga Practice

Yoga has a way of grounding us, bringing us closer to our breath, and offering a gentle retreat from the chaos of life. Join Adriene, along with her beloved companion Benji, for a calming session focused on soothing your nervous system.

Before diving into your yoga practice, find a comfortable space and attire. Whether you're equipped with a yoga blanket or content with a simple mat, ensure your environment invites relaxation and presence. Adriene gently introduces us to start by finding a comfortable seated position, either with elevated hips using a blanket or directly on the ground. Begin inviting length into the spine while maintaining ease and presence in your body.

Breath is the thread connecting our body and mind. Adriene encourages us to observe our breath without changing it. Notice its rhythm, whether it's quick or slow, shallow or deep. As an observer, allow your breath to guide without judgment, simply residing in the peaceful observation of its natural flow. This practice of breath awareness sets the stage for a more attentive session, heightening our internal awareness and inviting calm.

With palms either facing down or up on the thighs, the choice lies in what feels most grounding for you. Adriene highlights the importance of individual choices in yoga to foster a sense of safety and comfort.

As the practice continues, we'll engage in gentle neck movements and observe each subtle shift. Breathing thoughts float seamlessly into attention but softly guide them back with focused curiosity. This engagement offers a unique opportunity to stay present and balanced, repositioning hands from heart to belly, then allowing breath's movement to naturally adjust them.

Throughout the session, gentle lateral stretching and expansive breaths rooted from the rib cage deepen our connection. Adriene explains a beautiful metaphor of breathing as an umbrella opening and closing, inspiring imagery to help internalize an embracing expansion with each inhale, followed by a soothing contraction upon the exhale.

Extend and explore the lateral body line, acknowledging the invitation to deeply breathe into joyous motion as energy resonates side-to-side—synchronously bonded leans left, surrounding the canvas of encompassing engagement spearheaded by attentive awareness.

The session closes by settling into a position that resonates with where you are today—lay comfortably, maybe utilizing the bolster or without any support, resting against the earth in Savasana, Baddha Konasana, or decorously pretending a chosen resting pose. Extend gracious awareness elicited earlier through a journey of rest.
