15 min Air Element Yoga PRANAYAMA - Breathwork for Clarity & Connection

Hello everyone, and thank you for joining me. I’m Cassandra, and today, we’re immersing ourselves in the element of air as part of this Elemental Yoga Series. This yoga practice centers around breathing exercises, often called "pranayama," rooted deeply in the essence of air.

When we think of the element of air, images of floating thoughts and seamless connectivity come to mind. It is the inspiration for imagination, intuition, and intellectual flights of fancy, often described as having one's “head in the clouds.” Yet, it also serves as a powerful reminder of our mutual existence, connected through the air we all breathe.

Air encompasses two distinct qualities: its peaceful stillness and its turbulent, stormy nature. Just like a gentle breeze can silently flow around us, it can also spiral into a tornado’s ferocity, illustrating dual aspects of balance.

Unlike typical yoga sessions that incorporate physical poses or asanas, today's practice is a dedicated exploration of pranayama, heightening our connection to the air element through structured breathing techniques.

We begin with a beloved technique: the Breath of Joy. This exercise energizes the spirit by taking three inhales through the nose, with each one deeper than the last, followed by a powerful exhale out of the mouth.

  • Inhale through the nose three times.
  • Exhale joyously through the mouth.
  • Repeat this sequence twelve times.

Notice how this breathing exercise brings clarity and inspires positivity. This work can ground you, encouraging a playful bounce in your knees as you proceed.

Transitioning into a Kundalini practice known as the seated twist, this exercise intertwines conscious breath with body movement. With elbows raised, inhale left, exhale right to expand imagination and intertwine harmony with the environment.

Here, the internal mantra ~Sat Nam~ (meaning 'true identity') resonates, strengthening spiritual awareness amidst movement, repeated silently as you breathe.

Next, the calming Box Breath brings harmony within. Visualize a square by inhaling, holding, exhaling, and resting your breath for equal counts of four. This symmetry soothes mental fluctuations, providing gentle grounding to your being.

This practice invokes the tranquil hum akin to a bee as you close your eyes and plug ears using fingertips—away from distractions, delivered into inner stillness. With controlled counting, engage in ten rounds of deep, harmonious breath-taking that hums through one’s body, ultimately displaying another facet of creative expansions symbolic of air.

Reflect now on these versatile aspects of air that glue imagination and unveil connected inspiration in thought and calm breath. Thanking you so dearly for diving into this union with us through these sophisticated elements, continual engagement bounds path toward extensive knowledge, exploration, and cherished practices legitimately by personal peace.
