Ashtanga Yoga - The Eight Limbs of Yoga
In the ancient scriptures of the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, Maharishi Patanjali outlines a profound system known as Ashtanga Yoga, which translates to eight limbs of yoga.
The first limb of Ashtanga Yoga is Yam, which encompasses social ethics and moral codes. These form the foundation for interacting with others in society.
Following Yam, the second limb is Niam. These are personal observances and tasks aimed at nurturing discipline and spiritual growth within oneself.
Asan, or posture, constitutes the physical aspect of yoga that most are familiar with. These are the poses practiced to enhance physical flexibility and balance.
The fourth limb, Pranayam, involves breathing techniques designed to control and harness the inner breath, or prana, leading to enhanced vitality and energy normalization.
As we progress to the fifth limb, Pratyahara, we learn to withdraw our senses from the external world, calming the mind by reducing sensory distractions.
Once sensory withdrawal is achieved, the sixth stage focuses on Dhana, or concentration, which aids in refining mental focus towards internal areas of interest or spiritual aims.
Cutting closer to deeper meditative states is Dhyana, the seventh limb. It signifies a stage of effortlessness, where complete absorption is met in meditative concentration.
Finally, the practice culminates in Samadhi. It is the pinnacle of Ashtanga, defined by internal silence and unity, unlocking profound bliss and self-realization.
All these limbs should be not seen as linear or hierarchical steps, but rather, as interdependent parts of a cohesive whole for one’s spiritual and personal development.
